Sardines are having a surprising moment in the spotlight, with online influencers calling them a superfood and praising their nutritional benefits and affordable price tag.
The humble tinned fish has become the latest wellness obsession on social media, being sold as a way to get glowing skin and shiny hair without breaking the bank.

Enthusiastic supporters say sardines can lower inflammation and cholesterol, boost gut health and immunity, and provide essential nutrients.
But do the claims stack up? Dietitian Jemma O’Hanlon says this is one TikTok trend she can actually support.
“Sardines are one of the most excellent sources of omega-3s,” O’Hanlon said, which can nourish our skin and promote brain and heart health.
The recommended dose is two to three serves once a week, though O’Hanlon emphasises variety is key.
“You don’t just have to have sardines. We get a lot of nutrients when we eat a variety of protein sources, seafood, fish, but also our plant protein sources like nuts and legumes as well,” she said.
This isn’t the first time social media has sent shoppers into a frenzy. Earlier this year, cottage cheese and Greek yoghurt vanished from supermarket shelves after viral videos promoted their health benefits.
Demand has already soared for sardines, with the tinned fish stripped from supermarket shelves.
